Rex Heuermann, the suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer was back in court Thursday, just over two years after his arrest, as the highly watched Frye hearing on DNA evidence resumed.
The Massapequa Park man, who is accused of murdering seven women, watched attentively from his seat as the defense called Dr. Dan Krane to the stand.
Krane, testifying as a forensic DNA profiling expert, raised concerns about the testing methods being used in this case.
He argued that the program in question—which appears to involve emerging DNA analysis techniques—represents a "paradigm shift" from standard practices.
As News 12 has previously reported, this hearing began in March and centers around whether certain DNA evidence can be admitted at trial.
The outcome could significantly impact the path forward in what’s already a complex and closely followed case.
Despite the public interest, the trial itself may still be a long way off.
The defense says it won’t begin until at least 2026.
Before any date can be set, the court must rule on the admissibility of the DNA evidence and decide on a defense motion to separate the cases.
