There's a new "corner store' in Valley Stream.
The initiative is part of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County.
"All of our communities that are dealing with obesity they tend to be underserved with people that are falling below the poverty line, so we want to make sure they are made available," says executive director Vanessa Lockel.
Under the "healthy corner store" program, the organization works with local supermarkets to encourage them to stock healthier foods items on their shelves.
The Valley Stream store is the 12th location to open in Nassau County.
Organizers plan to open another "healthy corner store" in Riverhead sometime next week.
