A dead raccoon found in Amityville has tested positive for rabies, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.
This marks the fourth case of "locally acquired terrestrial rabies" reported in the Amityville area this year. Prior to this year, Suffolk County had not reported a rabid raccoon since 2009.
County health officials say there was no known human or pet contact with the raccoon.
