Hastings police had to go into the Hudson River Wednesday to arrest the driver who they say stole a car.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle in the afternoon on Broadway at Main Street.

The driver, 26-year-old Joseph Espinal, pulled into the driveway at 78 Main St. then drove onto the sidewalk and down a staircase before exiting on Main Street.

Espinal took off north after he left the car on Southside Avenue.

Police caught him in the river after a foot pursuit.

Espinal, of the Bronx, faces several charges, including criminal possession of stolen property.
