Some Halesite residents say they don’t want to see a neighboring piece of property developed, despite plans to do just that.

The “Vineyard Bay Estates” plan would mean eight new homes on the undeveloped property.

One resident told News 12 that “this is the lungs of Huntington and Halesite and Huntington Bay.”

Residents say they cherish the special land and the wildlife within it and would like to see it turned into a preserve called the ‘Nathan Hale Nature Preserve.’

An attorney for the developer tells News 12 that out of 10 acres of total land area, six acres will be preserved as open space in perpetuity.

The project has already received preliminary subdivision approval and now the applicant has to submit an application for final subdivision approval, according to the Town of Huntington.
