Long Island surfers will soon have a new place to catch some waves.
Crest Surf Club held its official groundbreaking Wednesday in Shirley.
Digging on the 55,000 square foot surf pool has already started. The pool will be the first of its kind in New York.
The surf club will produce customized waves for beginners to pros.
"We have over 5,000 people who have inquired about what is going on here, and that is just the start," says Crest Surf Club founder Brett Portera. "It's really special because it makes me go, 'OK, I didn't have a stupid idea, I have something people really want to be a part of.'"
The Crest Surf Club will be just off Exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway and is expected to open in the summer of 2024.
