About 50 students from Great Neck North High School walked out of class Thursday to call for action against gun violence.

Organizer Chloe Heiden, a sophomore, says the students are all getting a mark on their record for cutting class, but the importance of the issue makes any disciplinary action worth it.

“We're being hunted in our schools by people who advocate for this cultural phenomenon that supports widespread use of guns,” said Heiden.

Paul Guttenberg, who lost his niece, Jaime, in the Parkland shooting, joined the students during the rainy day protest.

“I vowed to never let that day be forgotten, and to fight in her memory to make sure other families and communities will not have to live through what my family, mostly my brother, and the Parkland community, has experienced,” said Guttenberg.

Guttenberg said that not enough measures have been put in place to prevent the next mass shooting.

News 12 reached out to Great Neck North High School for a comment but has not heard back.
