Great Neck North Middle School student Victor Yang received a hero-like welcome from students and teachers on Monday.

Yang made it all the way to the quarterfinals last week at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

"I am so happy I made it that far," says Yang.

This was the sixth grader's first time at the prestigious spelling bee competition.

School administrators say Yang had a great teacher: the school's previous spelling wiz who also placed in the quarterfinals last year.

"This is two years in row now that we have ranked in the contest. Kids here can say, 'I can do this too,'" explained English teacher Michael Norberto.
