The Long Islander who competed in the next round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee fell short Wednesday during the semifinals.
Brian Liu, a sixth grader from Great Neck North Middle School, was one of 121 spellers to advance after round four in Maryland.
Liu was eliminated after failing to spell the word meralgia, which is a nerve pain that is especially acute.
