A woman has died a few days after being struck by a vehicle in Suffolk County.

Theresa Nicke, 64, of Shirley, was out for her daily morning walk when police say she was hit by a 2013 Buick Regal.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 20 on Dawn Drive in Shirley.

The grandmother of 15 was hand-in-hand with her husband, less than a block away from their home, at the time of the crash, family members say.

Nicke was seriously hurt and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday, according to Suffolk police.

“This unexpected and unimaginable tragedy has shaken our family to its core and left us heartbroken as we try to navigate life without the woman who held us all together,” her children said in a post online.

The 23-year-old driver of the car stayed at the scene and was not injured.
