Nassau Legislature Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves could be facing a hefty fine for violating state election laws.

Gonsalves (R-East Meadow) is accused of 10 counts of failing to file the required campaign finance disclosure reports dating from 2006 to 2015.

According to a complaint from the state Board of Elections, there were eight "enforceable instances" when Gonsalves' political committee failed to file required campaign finance disclosure reports. Those reports list campaign donors and expenditures.

The attorney for the state's Board of Elections says Gonsalves actually failed to file those reports in a timely fashion on at least 34 different occasions.

She could be facing a $28,000 fine.

In a statement, Gonslaves said, "Our committee has been in full compliance with the law since learning of the deficiency. We believe this enforcement process to be flawed because the election law makes no provision for action against a committee that has voluntarily complied. In short, what the BOE is doing is partisan, misguided and without legal authority."

Nassau Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs says taxpayers should be concerned.

"If that money comes from vendors or others who seek favor with the county, and certainly Norma has a lot of control over that as the presiding officer, that would be important information," says Jacobs.

An elections board hearing officer will ultimately decide on the fine.
