An Islip man who helped evacuate hundreds of people during the Sept. 11 terror attacks is now getting some much-needed help following a house fire.
The past few years have been extremely difficult for 9/11 responder Bob McMahon.
The Islip resident lost his wife, Marguerite, to ovarian cancer in 2021. The two had always looked forward to celebrating the day they paid off their mortgage.
McMahon paid it off in September, without his wife by his side.
On Jan. 3, a fire from a faulty boiler tore through his Islip home where he lives with his daughter, granddaughter and son. The house is no longer livable. On top of that, McMahon said he believed he was still insured, but then found out his insurance had lapsed.
His loved ones have stepped in to help the man who rescued so many on 9/11 through a GoFundMe. Despite all the hardship, McMahon is grateful that no one --- including the family’s dog and rabbit – was hurt in the fire.
