Former Rep. Gabby Giffords was in Dix Hills on Sunday to speak about gun control and to show support for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.
The former congresswoman received a standing ovation from the crowd of about 200 people at Five Towns College. She was joined by her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, along with Rep. Steve Israel and others.
In 2011, Giffords survived an assassination attempt when a gunman opened fire at a pubic event in her state of Arizona. Six people were killed, 13 were injured, and Giffords was shot in the head and critically wounded.
Giffords and her husband have been vocal supporters of gun control legislation in the wake of the shooting, and that is why the former congresswoman says Clinton is getting her support.
"She will stand up to the gun lobby, that's why I'm voting for Hillary," Giffords told the crowd. "Speaking is difficult for me, but come January I want to say two words: Madame President."
Giffords' visit came two days ahead of the New York primary elections.
