Freeport High School was evacuated Friday after police received a call saying there could be multiple bombs in the building and two gunmen, according to Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy.
Police said the threats were deemed not credible after students were brought out to the sports fields for three hours as Nassau police, Freeport police and the Department of Homeland Security searched the inside of the building.
Students had just arrived for classes when the evacuation happened at 7:28 a.m.
The district says authorities are continuing to investigate the false threats with them, telling parents in a statement:
"Unfortunately, incidents of false threats against schools have been on the rise both locally and nationwide, causing unnecessary fear and frustration for families and school districts alike."
Parents at Freeport High School told News 12 they received calls from friends who heard what happened and noticed crowds along Sunrise Highway, where the school is located.
Rosie Cructa, a parent of a high school student, said, "Beginning of the school year, it's crazy. Enough. Our kids are not even safe."
Students and teachers were allowed back in the building at 10:30 a.m. The district said additional security measures would be taken for the remainder of the school day out of an abundance of caution.
