A former Nassau County nursing home aide has been convicted of sexually abusing two disabled residents he was hired to care for, according to the New York Attorney General’s Office.

Phillip Harris, 43, was found guilty Wednesday of nine charges, including multiple felony counts of endangering the welfare of a vulnerable or disabled person. Harris began working at the Glengariff Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Glen Cove in December 2021 and assaulted the residents just three months later, according to the Attorney General's Office. One victim reported the abuse to his wife and daughter, prompting an internal investigation that uncovered the second assault.

Attorney General Letitia James called Harris’ actions “despicable,” adding that nursing home residents “deserve high-quality care” and should be able to trust their caregivers.

Laura Ahearn, executive director of the Crime Victims Center for Suffolk and Nassau counties, urged families to report any signs of abuse immediately. She said families should also conduct thorough interviews when choosing a facility for a loved one.

Harris faces up to four years in prison for each felony charge related to each victim. He is expected to be sentenced in December.

News 12 has made several attempts to reach Glengariff Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for comment and is awaiting a response.
