Former Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday for accepting bribes.
His wife, Linda Mangano, was sentenced to 15 months in jail.
"It is a terrible, painful day for me and my family," Ed Mangano said after the sentencing.
The Manganos were both convicted three years ago, but appeals and delays postponed their sentencing hearings.
Ed Mangano was found guilty of accepting bribes from an Oyster Bay businessman in exchange for preferential treatment.
The judge told Ed Mangano that his crimes were "motivated by greed" and that the corruption "rot ran deep in Nassau County, and in you."
Linda Mangano was found guilty of obstruction of justice and lying to the FBI. She had a "no-show job" through the same businessman through which she collected $450,000.
An attorney for the Manganos said they were disappointed with the sentence and will move on with an appeal.
Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said the sentence shows that corruption and obstruction will not be tolerated.
"Edward Mangano's blatant acts of corruption and the defendant's concerted efforts to obstruct a federal investigation display a stunning abuse of power," Peace says.
Ed Mangano is set to surrender on June 13, and Linda Mangano will surrender on June 27
