Community members in Kearny are mourning the loss of a 25-year-old woman who was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Newark early Saturday morning.

Estefania Dilone was traveling on Route 21 near Riverside Avenue in Newark when the crash happened, according to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II.

The prosecutor said Newark police began receiving 911 calls reporting the crash around 2 a.m. Witnesses told police that the vehicle, which had been traveling on the northbound side of the elevated roadway, became airborne and went over a guardrail. The car then flipped over and landed on Riverside Avenue.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they found Dilone trapped inside the vehicle. She was extricated and transported to University Hospital in Newark, where she was pronounced dead, the prosecutor said. The passenger, who was also in the vehicle, was also hospitalized for minor facial fractures.

According to her obituary, Dilone played basketball at Bloomfield College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in marketing. She was working for a sports apparel company at the time of her death. A funeral is set for Saturday in Kearny.

The prosecutor said the crash remains under investigation.
