2 killed, 1 injured in Smithtown house fire

A fire ripped through a home in Smithtown Sunday afternoon, leaving two people inside dead and another injured.

Police said they received 911 calls reporting a fire at 178 Fifty Acre Road South around 3:15 p.m.

Detectives said a resident identified as 91-year-old Ronald Montagna was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns.

The names of the two other victims, a male and a female, where being withheld as of Sunday night pending family notification.

The St. James Fire Department and seven other mutual aid crews worked to quell the flames at the home.

Video from the scene showed heavy flames and smoke pouring out broken windows.

Mutual aid crews were released from the scene around 5:30 p.m. when all visible fire appeared to be knocked out.

A cause of the fire was not immediately known, but police said Sunday night that it appeared to be non-criminal.

Police ask anyone with information about the fire to call the Suffolk County Police Department Homicide Squad Detectives at 631-852-6392.
