Parents and young kids ran for cover in East Patchogue Sunday morning after a gun was recovered outside a pee wee football game.
Suffolk police say it happened after a fight involving a group of people on Richmond Avenue near Hallock Park where Patchogue-Medford was playing Bellport.
Parents who were at the game did not want to speak on camera. They told News 12 that they picked up their children and ran after someone yelled “He has a gun.”
Suffolk police say two people are in custody and a firearm was recovered. They say no one was injured and shots were not fired.
It was not immediately clear if the people involved in the fight were associated with the game or how the altercation started.
Parents say police arrived within 10 minutes, and the staff at the game made sure that all children and family members were accounted for.
“It’s terrible. We’re supposed to be enjoying the nice weather…We have to have our head on a swivel all the time,” said Randy Palumbo, a neighbor.
“It’s so sad that it happened, and I don’t have any answers. What’s happening to society?” asked a neighbor near the park.
