Fire Island Ferries issuing a safety warning after a man jumped off a boat Tuesday in Bay Shore.

It happened as a ferry was pulling into the Maple Avenue marina from Ocean Beach.

The Coast Guard says he refused to climb back on, swam to shore and tried to run. He was stopped by police.

"Underneath that ferry are three giant propellers," says Fire Island Ferries General Manager Dave Anderson. "They will chew you up and split you out. Somebody's going to have to explain to your next of kin that there's nothing left but bait."

People can also be fined up to $25,000 for rail jumping.
