A 62-year-old man was killed in a fire at a multifamily home that erupted Friday night in Van Nest, according to authorities.

Firefighters responded to the home at 1440 Saint Lawrence Ave. just after 9 p.m.

Twenty-five fire units and over 100 crew members fought the heavy flames as they spread to a second building.

Officials say the flames were brought under control just after 10 p.m.

News 12 spoke to Dufort Joseph, the owner of one of the homes impacted by the fire. He said he was renting a room to the 62-year-old who died.

"He was a nice guy, he [went] to church every day. I miss him," Joseph said.

The American Red Cross said it is assisting 11 impacted households with financial assistance and temporary lodging.

A firefighter was also hospitalized with minor injuries.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
