A special salute was given in Mineola two days ahead of Veterans Day to females who served in the military.
Six women were recognized for their service and heroism at the Nassau County Courthouse in Mineola.
Sgt. Evelyn Kandel of Glen Cove joined the Marines in 1951 when it was rare for women to be in the military.
The now 90-year-old says she was never on the front lines but became the faces on the Marine Corps recruiting posters.
"I was leading other women to come and be a Marine, so from that stand I said, 'OK I was a trailblazer,' Kandel says.
The women honored on Wednesday served for different branches during the Korean War, Vietnam War and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
