You're likely not alone if you or someone you know feels under the weather.
New data from the New York Health Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that this is one of the worst flu seasons in over a decade, and Long Island is being hit particularly hard.
"I've been hearing a lot of people of my customers having the flu," contractor Walter Braiter said.
According to the state health department, 5,673 flu cases were reported last week in Nassau County and 6,189 in Suffolk.
Nearly 700 people were hospitalized on the island last week, according to those numbers.
"Abnormally high," Syosset Hospital Medical Director Dr. Randolph DiLorenzo said.
The state considers flu season to run from October of the previous year through May of the next year and data shows this flu season on Long Island is likely to eclipse last year's total number of reported cases shortly.
In Suffolk, there were 40,527 reported cases in the seven-month flu season between the end of 2023 and the start of 2024. There have already been 31,850 reported cases between last October and last week in the county.
In Nassau, there were 35,654 cases last flu season while there have already been 31, 841 through last week this season.
"If you are positive you would want to isolate yourself so that you don't spread it to anybody else," DiLorenzo said. "In addition, you could get the flu vaccine even now."
The largest groups of people getting sick are kids between five and 17 and adults between 18 and 49, according to state data.
