The family of a Farmingdale man killed when a car being chased by Suffolk police crashed into his living room is suing the department.
Brian Calhoun was home when Richard Mair, of Mastic, collided into his house, killing his 59-year-old father, William Calhoun, two weeks ago. He and the family attorney say the officers in pursuit violated department policy by continuing a high-speed chase of a low-level suspected criminal for so long. Their attorney says a supervisor should have called off their pursuit after 30 seconds. The Route 109 house is still unlivable due to structural damage.
Some county officials have publicly backed police efforts. They say the officers did the right thing by trying to capture the suspect, despite the chase's unfortunate conclusion. Mair is scheduled to return to court in March.
