Double-digit fare hikes could be in the future for those who ride the rails.
The state comptroller's office says the MTA is facing a $15 billion gap in its capital plan for next year through 2019.
To fill that, riders could see fare increases of 1 percent for every billion, which would add up to 15 percent over the time period.
The MTA has already announced a 4 percent fare hike for next year.
MTA Board Member Mitch Pally says he doesn't believe the fare hikes will go beyond the already agreed upon 4 percent next year.
Pally says the MTA will decide in the next few months which capital programs to trim, where to make cuts and where additional revenue might be found.
