The family of a young Peruvian boy is thanking doctors at Schneider Children?s Hospital as their son is recovering from a risky, possibly life-saving operation.
Sebastian Jimenez Pina, 5, had a peach-sized tumor removed from his right temple just seven days ago. He wears a cap covering the scars.
?We are here, we are surrounded by good people with their words and prayers,? mother Wendy Pina said.
The boy started getting sick with headaches and nausea last July in Peru. Doctors there were successful in removing a cancerous tumor last August, but another was discovered in November. Peruvian doctors could not treat it.
Pina may be in America from six months to a year for treatment. Doctors say he will need chemo and radiation therapy, but family members say they?re happy the surgery went well.
While getting his treatment, Pina and his parents will be living with relatives in Glen Cove and Hicksville.
