The city of Bridgeport made sure Thanksgiving was still on the table for families who were displaced by a fire.

Jayda Hostos, one of the residents displaced by the fire, recalls the challenges.

“My mom was stuck in the building. She’s disabled, so she’s not able to get up and leave herself,” said Hostos.

Hostos’ family lost almost everything in the fire.

The Red Cross and the City of Bridgeport put Hostos and other displaced families at the Homewood Suites by Hilton.

“It is our job, it's not just public health, it's really the city’s mission to be there for its constituents, and that’s what we’re going to do,” said Bridgeport director of Health and Social Services Dr. Elizabeth Rodriguez.

Bridgeport Mayor Ganim presented the families with all the food they need for a Thanksgiving meal.

Ganim gave out turkeys provided by the city Bridgeport.

Homewood Suites by Hilton provided the apple pie, and BlackRock Church donated other items to the families.

Hostos said It’s not the Thanksgiving she was expecting – but she’s still feeling grateful this season.

"We'll probably be cooking the turkey here. We're lucky enough to be able to have thanksgiving, I really didn't believe we would be able to,” said Hostos.

Officials said the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
