A fallen Navy SEAL from Patchogue inspired a CrossFit workout that people across the country repeated Monday to mark Memorial Day.
Coast Guard Station Jones Beach hosted its first annual Murph Challenge in Freeport to honor the fallen Medal of Honor recipient Lt. Michael P. Murphy.
The challenge is a CrossFit workout named in honor of Lt. Murphy, who died in Afghanistan in 2005.
Every year on Memorial Day, people perform Murphy's favorite workout, a one-mile run followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air-squats and then another mile run.
Before the challenge, participants we're given a pep-talk by Lt. Murphy's father, Daniel Murphy.
"We're always proud of Michael," the father says. "Maureen, his mother, and I say Michael was a hero long before long before he joined the military. It was in his nature. He didn't get the name 'Murph the Protector' for no reason, that was always his way, to put himself out for others."
Lt. Murphy became a SEAL in 2002 and deployed four times to Afghanistan before he was killed in combat in 2005. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2007.
The commanding officer of the Jones Beach station says he previously hosted Murph Challenges when he was stationed in Houston, before he took charge on Long Island.
