Police are searching for a man they say robbed a BP gas station in Rockville Centre at knifepoint early Thursday morning, slashing an employee in the face before stealing money from the register.

According to police, the robbery happened at the BP gas station on Sunrise Highway just before 3:45 a.m.

Surveillance video provided by the station's owner shows the suspect walking behind the counter, confronting the employee and slashing his face with a knife before opening the cash register.

"I feel terrible," says Hitendra Shah, a co-owner. "My guy didn't say anything. He didn't try to play any smartness or anything. He's been here for a very, very long time."

The employee was transported to a hospital and is expected to recover. The owner says the worker needed about 14 stitches.

"It could've been worse. Thank God the guy didn't hurt him a lot," says Shah.

One woman who lives nearby told News 12 she was planning to go to the store in the middle of the night to get food.

"It's my local store," says Eleanor Baxmeyer, a Lynbrook resident. "I was going to come here. I got up just before 4 a.m., and I was going to come get some ice cream and I don't know, I just didn't. I didn't come."

Baxmeyer said she regularly sees the employee who was injured.

"He's a really, really nice man. Very mild mannered, very calm, quiet and he's always here," she says.
