Penn Station is getting a major makeover, and News 12's Eileen Lehpamer was there for a behind-the-scenes tour of the project.
The goal of the rebuild is to bring Penn Station into the modern era. That means a lot of demolition and redesigning parts of the station that are well-known.
New higher ceilings will be key to giving Penn Station a whole new feel.
LIRR Concourse Project CEO Jolyon Handler says the original steel beams from the station are 6 feet, 8 inches from the ground, and the goal of the project is to raise the ceiling heights to 18 feet.
An air plenum will also be installed to circulate fresh air through Penn Station.
"So now when you come down the new Phase One entry, you'll come into Penn and have all this new natural daylight, this new fresh air, a real new feeling when you come through Penn, much softer, much more inviting," says LIRR Concourse Project Director Matthew Zettwoch.
The MTA says the new Penn Station rebuild should be completed by early 2023.
