A former captain in the St. James Fire Department passed away Saturday after completing a food drive for the junior fire department.
Richard Weisse Sr. was a member of the volunteer department for 42 years.
He had spent the morning with the junior volunteers, collecting food for those in need. He then rushed to a fire call at a local school.
Chief Michael Grayson says Weisse returned to the food drive and collapsed shortly after. His death was caused by a heart attack.
Trish Weisse, his daughter and an EMT volunteer with the department, was with her father at the time. She and her brother, Richard Jr., says they are proud of their father's legacy.
A wake for Weisse will be held at the Saint James Fire House on Wednesday and Thursday. His funeral will be held Friday.
