Environmentalists urge Nassau to consider plastic bag fee
Environmental groups are urging Nassau County lawmakers to consider implementing a plastic bag fee.
A bill introduced earlier this month would place a 5-cent fee on single-use plastic and paper bags.
"People care about this, they understand the plastic pollution is a huge issue," says Jordan Christensen, of Citizens Campaign for the Environment. "If we don't do anything by 2050, we're going to have more plastic in our ocean than fish."
Since the start of the bag fee in Suffolk County, environmentalists say plastic bag use has decreased from 70 to 30 percent.
