Tens of thousands of Long Islanders, like Jonathan Silberstein, rely on the Affordable Care Act for health insurance, which just got more expensive at the start of the year.

"My premium went up, so it went up $50 or so," said Silberstein, of Huntington.

Health care prices under the Affordable Care Act are up in 2026 after lawmakers did not renew enhanced cost savings.

Insurance broker James Donnelley says for some of his clients on the Affordable Care Act, costs rose more than a $100 per month.

"Can they pay for soccer for their children, can they pay for that extra curricular activity, because that's a monthly payment that's now going up," said James Donnelly, owner of Safe Haven Insurance Agency.

Thursday is the last day to enroll or renew health care through the Affordable Care Act for coverage for the rest of the year. However, there are some exceptions where you can enroll throughout the year if you have a qualifying life event.

"You have special election periods if there's life changes, so if you have a sudden loss of income, if you have a new child, if you move," said Donnelly.

This month the house passed a plan to extend the expired health care subsidies.

It's now in the hands of the Senate.
