A long-running tradition at Eastport Elementary School is once again making a big impact in the community.
Each year, the school’s sixth-grade class comes together with their families for a large celebration. It's a feast that marks a milestone moment for the students, but for the past 12 years, the event has carried an even deeper meaning.
After the celebration ends, students gather up all the leftover food and donate it to a different local food pantry each year. This year, the recipients are Saint John’s Outreach Food Distribution Center in Center Moriches.
The donated dishes will be used as part of a family-style meal served in the days leading up to Christmas, a time when many local families seek extra support.
Teachers say it’s a lesson in gratitude and giving that these students learn early and one that continues to grow with every passing class.
