A jury sentenced an East Quogue man to life without the possibility of parole on Thursday for killing his friend.

Jeremy Allen, 44, was found guilty of torturing his friend, 43-year-old Christopher Hahn, for six hours, ultimately leading to Hahn’s death.

Family and friends spoke as the sentencing was handed down, saying it’s not about the punishment, but the irreplaceable life that was taken. They remembered Hahn as a good man, a loyal friend and a bright soul.

Blake Cornell, a friend of Hahn, mentioned Hahn’s adventurous spirit and love of travel.

He said that “Chris deserved so much more time on this earth. He deserved to keep exploring, to keep showing up for the people he cared about, to keep spreading that rare kind of light he carried so easily. We deserved more of him.”

Surveillance from Allen’s home recorded him beating Hahn with a baseball bat, suffocating him and stabbing him in the neck 10 times.

The two had been friends since high school, prosecutors said.

During the torture, prosecutors said that Allen sat on a lawn chair for eight minutes a few feet away from Hahn while Hahn struggled to breathe with a plastic bag tied with a loose knot around his neck.

After Hahn's final breath, Allen contacted his handyman to help him clean up the blood and the scene. Allen told the handyman he was not allowed to leave after what he saw, but the handyman was able to convince Allen to let him go.

Once persuaded, the handyman called the police and told them what he saw.

Allen was also found guilty of tampering with physical evidence.
