East Northport homeowner calls for safety changes at crash-prone intersection

A frustrated East Northport homeowner is urging officials to improve safety at a crash-prone intersection after more than 20 accidents have occurred outside her home since 2018.

An East Northport homeowner is calling for changes to a dangerous intersection after years of crashes outside her home.

Jodie Dionne, who lives next to the intersection of Elwood Road and Clay Pitts Road, says she worries every time she hears the sound of another collision.

"With the speeders and all the other traffic out here, our biggest concern is if someone ends up going through the house one day," Dionne said.

Dionne says vehicles have repeatedly struck her property and collided nearby since her family moved into the home in 2018.

"Someone hit our tree. Some of the bark is missing. Not the end of the world. Someone hit the garage a couple of years ago. There was a small crack. We've lost our mailbox three times," she said.

According to Dionne, her family has called 911 for more than 20 crashes at the intersection over the past several years. The most recent happened in June, when a vehicle crashed through her fence.

"We've had a number of people that have been injured. We had someone hit on a bicycle a few years ago. We've had rear-ends, t-bones and the most recent one came up through our fence," Dionne said.

Concerned about the frequency of the crashes, Dionne reached out to her Suffolk County legislator Stephanie Bontempi for help. In response, the county is conducting a traffic study at the intersection.

"A guard rail would be great. Something to keep the corner safe. If they could do a turn lane arrow. If they did no turn on red or reduced the speed," she said.
