News 12's Doug Geed took a look at the all new Canoe Place Inn & Cottages in Hampton Bays.

It was the Shinnecocks who first gathered on the spot thousands of years ago.

Once the settlers moved in, it became everything from a stagecoach stop, to an elegant restaurant and dancing club in the early 1900s, to more of a disco scene for the young crowd in the 70s and 80s.

Now, the Canoe Place Inn & Cottages is a completely refurbished 20-room inn with five cottages, a restaurant and huge ballroom.

"We're not trying to be anything that it never was. It's really a gateway to the Hamptons, and it's always been a gateway to the Hamptons," says Michael Brod, managing director of hospitality for Rechler Equities.

Their restaurant -- Good Ground Tavern -- serves a couple of items you may have ordered way back in the day -- clams casino and crab cakes.

"We want people to come to Canoe Place Inn or Good Ground Tavern, we want them to feel like they're home. That's why our food, our drink, our environment matches with that," says Chef Ulfet Ralph.

"I can confidently say it turned out to be more than the expectations were on the design side, on the feel of the inn and the support we've received from the community, the feedback we are receiving from our guests which is very positive. So yes – very proud," says General Manager Mario Arakelian.
