Famed author John Steinbeck used to hang out there and actor Paul Newman as well. On this week’s East End, News 12’s Doug Geed takes us to a Sag Habor resort celebrating a big anniversary.
Baron’s Cove is a waterfront resort that is kind of hidden, even though it’s just blocks from downtown Sag Harbor.
This year, it's celebrating its 65th anniversary.
About 80 years ago, the resort was purchased and refurbished by Cape Resorts, which owns about a half dozen iconic resorts in the northeast.
“When we discovered this property we were charmed by it immediately. It was a little forlorn, but we saw an opportunity to re-establish the restaurant and to renovate the facility,” says Curtis Bashaw of Cape Resorts.
What they focused on was the historic look of the property, including the bar room.
Back in the day, the bar attracted big names -- from Paul Newman to authors Truman Capote and John Steinbeck.
As part of its celebration, Baron's is serving John Steinbeck's favorite cocktail -- a Jack Rose - apple brandy and grenadine.
There's an upstairs restaurant, and dining also takes place on the front porch, covered side patio and umbrella tables overlooking the pool area and cabanas.
