A man accused of causing a fuel spill after driving while intoxicated and crashing into a construction vehicle was arrested Thursday night in Brookhaven.

Suffolk police say the incident began as 49-year-old John Arthur Seeger, of Medford, was traveling westbound on Sunrise Highway between Exits 57 and 58.

He entered a closed construction area in the right lane and hit the driver’s side of an empty construction vehicle around 11:37 p.m.

Fuel from the construction tank began to spill on the roadway, which remained closed for around four hours.

The Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the scene to assess the leak.

No injuries were reported. Police say Seeger is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning at First District Court in Central Islip.
