A disabled teenager says a crash on his Holbrook street wrecked the van that he needs to get to school.
Daniel Ferencsik awoke this past weekend to find his custom-designed conversion van up in flames in front of his home. Suffolk County police say a drunken driver struck two parked vehicles -- the van and another car on Avenue B -- and ignited a fire just before 3 a.m. Sunday.
The 18-year-old Ferencsik was born with spinal muscular atrophy. He says the van was his lifeline when it comes to getting to and from class at Farmingdale State College. He's now forced to take public transportation and says the commute takes about two hours instead of the usual half-hour.
Police say the driver accused in the crash, 27-year-old Avinash Mahadeo, is facing a DWI charge and lives just down the block from the crash site. Authorities say he was also charged with DWI in 2014.
Mahadeo is scheduled to be back in court Oct. 17.
