Protesters stood outside the Lawrence headquarters of the Nassau County Bridge Authority, demanding a reversal of a toll increase that went into effect at the beginning of the year.

Most drivers are paying $3 to cross the bridge, a $1 increase.

Large trucks pay $16 each way.

The protesters were joined by Democrat Alexis Pace, a candidate for Nassau County legislator.

Nassau County Bridge Authority board members say the toll increase is needed to maintain the bridge.

The board says another toll hike is not planned for the next five to 10 years.

E-ZPass tolling on the bridge is expected to be operational within four to six weeks.
