Federal health officials say it’s safe for children to go out trick-or-treating for Halloween this year, but there are extra safety precautions that should be considered.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the president, says children who are not vaccinated may want to add a face mask to their costume as a safety precaution.
Joshua Rocker, director pediatrics at Cohens Children Medical Center, says most of the children who are going to be trick-or-treating are in the unvaccinated group.
“And if they’re going in a group, like we recommend for safety, then they should be masked,” Rocker says.
Some parents tell News 12 their children won’t be wearing masks while other family members say they will be doing other things to keep their trick-or-treaters safe.
Woodbury resident Jennifer Crecco says her children won’t be wearing masks because they don’t wear them outside during recess or when they play sports.
“No, we won’t be doing the mask outside,” Crecco says.
Oakdale resident Pat Borbee says she is nervous for her grandchildren and would like them to wear a mask.
“He has to wear it now, he in preschool,” Borbee says. “I don’t see why it would be any different.”
Rocker says if children want to eat candy while trick-or-treating, they should be washing their hands or using Purell.
