Dr. Edward Salina, the superintendent of schools in Plainedge for the past 14 years, has resigned.

The Board of Education accepted Salina's resignation at a special meeting on Friday night. A reason for his departure was not detailed.

Carol Muscarella, a principal in the school district, was named interim superintendent.

According to a letter sent to families and staff:

"Upon the conclusion of his superintendency, Dr. Salina has graciously agreed to provide transition support to the incoming superintendent of schools during this year."

The letter also included prepared remarks from Salina that reads in part:

"Although I will be stepping away from my role as Superintendent, I will always remain a proud member of the Plainedge family. I have every confidence that the district will continue to thrive and reach even greater heights in the years ahead."

Last month, Salina was featured in a News 12 story touting new "lifesaving" devices installed throughout the district’s schools to be used in case of an emergency.
