The city acknowledges motorcycles fatalities are on the rise. News 12 Valerie Ryan takes a look into why.

Over the weekend, News 12 reported two separate motorcycle crashes in the borough, resulting in three deaths.

The Department of Transportation says motorcycle fatalities in New York City hit record levels in 2023.

Eddie Ramirez, co-founder of the Hudson Valley Biker Network, says the lack of proper training, especially knowing how to brake, is sometimes the results of these tragic events.

Ramirez says training is not required to get a motorcycle license, and just like a car, people can apply for a motorcycle permit at the age of 16.

The NYPD Highways District says it is increasing awareness in communities while also cracking down on riders not following the rules.
