Survivors of domestic violence came together in Port Jefferson Thursday to help each other and others.
The Empowerment Collaborative of Long Island (ECLI) Vibes' Butterfly Gala supported the nonprofit's work to educate people about domestic violence and to help survivors.
"I think everybody has some sort of trauma that they've experienced in their life," says Monica Freyberg. "Having been an abuse survivor, it strikes a chord."
In addition to local domestic abuse survivors, the Suffolk County Police Human Trafficking Unit and some member of Gabby Petito's family were also at the event.
Gabby Petito's stepmother, Tara Petito, says abuse can come in different forms.
"There's emotional, there's financial, there's gaslight, manipulating," Tara Petito says.
Co-founder of ECLI Vibes Jennifer Hernandez says her organization not only supports survivors, but tries to prevent other from being abused by taking aim at the issue of the problem.
"Human trafficking, domestic violence, substance abuse is only a symptom of whatever it is those individuals experienced when they were young," Hernandez says. "So, number one, prevention is key."
