Residents of the Syosset Mobile Home Park heard Thursday the news they feared most: they're being evicted.
STP Associates, LLC, the developer that recently purchased the property, told residents the land would be redeveloped by 2009 at the latest. At most, that gives individuals one-and-a-half years to move out.
In addition, residents were told their rent will increase. Starting in September, residents will pay $750 a month, rather than $500. STP Associates planned on further increasing the rent to $1,000 a month, but compromised during Thursday meeting.
Despite complaints from trailer owners, the property owner's spokesperson Judy White said a rent hike is more than fair.
"This rent is dramatically below market in the Syosset area," she said in a statement.
Residents said they'll lose more than just location when they're kicked off the property. They said the $40,000-$60,000 sale price of their mobile home will take a major hit once the allure of living in Syosset is gone. Additionally, they said most trailer parks on Long Island require the use of trailers already there.
