Plans to widen Route 25 in Smithtown have been scrapped by the Department of Transportation.

The state says it is revising its plan for the roadway, but has no timetable for its future.

Smithtown home and business owners are furious.

"It is pretty horrendous in the morning, even at night it gets backed up," says Pete O'Connor, of East Setauket.

"Something needs to be done," Karla Gentile told News 12 Long Island.

The town is working with the DOT on possible improvements that don't include adding lanes. Smithtown Planning Director Frank DeRubeis believes smaller lanes and designated turning lanes may relieve the traffic trouble.
