Long Island Democrats won two crucial seats in special elections Tuesday.
Democrat Michelle Schimel, of Great Neck, delivered a landslide victory over Republican Ryan DeCicco, of Port Washington, for the state Assembly's 16th District. Schimel will take over the seat left vacant by Tom DiNapoli after he became the state comptroller.
In an election that tipped the scales of power in the Nassau County Legislature, Democrat Wayne Wink, of Roslyn, re-established a one-vote majority for his party. Wink defeated Republican candidate Lou Chisari, of New Hyde Park, for the 11th District seat. Both were battling to replace Craig Johnson, who won his own special election for a state Senate seat earlier this year.
