The Democratic challenger for retiring Rep. Peter King's open seat has conceded in the race.
Retired Lt. Col. Jackie Gordon released a statement Wednesday saying she called Republican Andrew Garbarino to congratulate him on his victory. Garbarino declared victory in the race weeks ago.
Gordon says while Garbarino's lead has narrowed since the absentee count began, she says, "It has become apparent that we did not achieve the number of votes needed to win this race."
She continued by saying, "It is crucial that every vote be counted and that every voice be heard in this election. I have dedicated my entire life to service, and that will continue after this campaign" and thanked those who voted for her.
Garbarino, who was endorsed by Rep, King, is set to be part of Congress after serving in the state Assembly for eight years.
The district includes a small portion of southeastern Nassau County and extends into southwestern Suffolk, including portions of the towns of Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Babylon and Islip.
