DEC: 20-year-old bitten in water at Jones Beach, mostly likely by young shark

New York State Parks says it happened Wednesday around 4:15 p.m. while the woman was waist-deep in the water at the Central Mall beachfront.

A 20-year-old was taken to the hospital after being bitten in the water at Jones Beach.

News 12 told the woman did not see what bit her, but the state DEC says it was most likely a young sand tiger shark.

New York State Parks says it happened Wednesday around 4:15 p.m. while the woman was waist-deep in the water at the Central Mall beachfront.

News 12 was told she has minor cuts to her left foot and leg.

Park police and staff searched with drones and surfboats after the incident and did not find anything.
